Defined by residential housing communities, shopping centers and various suburban family commodities, Reisterstown is a lot like the other suburban towns around Maryland. However, that isn't to suggest that it isn't worth visiting. Within its boundaries is something for just about everyone, whether it is a spa, a golf course, a place to shop or a new restaurant to try.

With easy access to the state's main traffic arteries and comfortable proximity to nearby towns and cities, Reisterstown remains at an ample distance from the beltway and the blur of activity inside it. This lends an island effect to Reisterstown's atmosphere. Since it is removed from Baltimore -- though not too much -- the town preserves its roots while simultaneously staying in the thick of the area's business and events. Fittingly, busy Reisterstown Road becomes Main Street when it hits the heart of Reisterstown.

Described as a "bedroom community," Reisterstown prides itself on being a quiet residential town with most shops and restaurants being smaller, family-owned and operated establishments. Though it is a far cry from a blip of a town in the boondocks, Reisterstown's small-town origins have stayed intact as development has brought chain stores and restaurants and some fast food joints.

Reisterstown's humble nature is complemented by its offerings of leisurely indoor and outdoor pursuits, away from the shopping centers and boutiques. The Reisterstown Recreation Council offers athletic instruction for kids of all ages in several different sports, from football to field hockey. There are also some adult leagues for basketball, volleyball and boxing. Reisterstown Regional Park has several baseball and softball diamonds and playing fields for leagues and pick-up games of soccer or baseball. For people who are looking for something that requires a different kind of skill, the Mid-Atlantic Golf Center has miniature golf, a nine-hole course and a driving range.

While it certainly isn't the hectic city, Reisterstown's appeal is in its modesty. Its purpose is to be a nice place to live, and it happens to have plenty of recreational activities that draw visitors to its streets. It is a perfect example of what suburban Baltimore County is like, and will probably stay that way for some time to come.
