Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps today qualified for Thursday's 200 individual medley final at the Aquatic Centre in London.
They finished 1-2 in their heat, while Laszlo Cseh of Hungary won the second heat. Lochte is seeded first for the final, Cseh second and Phelps third.
It will be a rematch of their 400 IM final to kick off the Games in which Lochte won easily and Phelps finished fourth.
If Phelps wins, he could become the first Olympian to win the same event in three consecutive Games.
On Tuesday, Phelps became the most-decorated Olympian of all-time by winning two medals, giving him 19 and surpassing Soviet-era gymnast Larisa Latynina's 18, a record that lasted 48 years.
Phelps spent part of this morning responding to congratulations messages from President Obama, singer Lil Wayne, actor Josh Charles, Irish golfer Graeme McDowell, New England Patriots wide receiver and former Raven Donte Stallworth and Washington Wizards guard John Wall and fellow Olympians Kimmie Meissner, Shaun White and Apolo Ohno.
