"Hollantown" to the locals and Highlandtown to those not so savvy -- whatever it is to you, there's no question this neighborhood is just so typically Baltimore.

It's really hard to picture a time when Highlandtown wasn't a part of Baltimore, but that time did happen. This neighborhood, arguably the very quintessence of Baltimore, was once a small town outside the city limits. The look and feel of the area still belies these beginnings. Much like the surrounding areas of Canton and Fells Point, Highlandtown feels like a small town trapped in a big city. The brick rowhouses with their marble stoops are typical of the architecture seen in Baltimore City. The corner bars, no matter how much they look like dives, are always populated by locals. Although Highlandtown had been seen as "going downhill," the area is now resurgent -- many young couples are buying and fixing up homes, and many businesses (both small and big) are moving in along the main drag on Eastern Avenue.

Highlandtown is one of those place where you might find kids living down the street from their parents, who might live down the street from their parents. The area has a tight-knit community which, paired with the plethora of small shops and eateries, lends to its small-town atmosphere. Among the many shops is an area on Eastern Avenue known as "Bridal Row," famous for dress shops and florists.

You really can't say Highlandtown without thinking of Patterson Park. Though it's up for debate whether the park is located in Highlandtown proper, the area that used to be a scary place to go at night is now just a nice place to play catch with the kids or walk the dog. Like the town that surrounds it, the park has been reclaimed by the locals in an effort to revitalize the area. The park has a lot of wide open spaces and features the Mimi DiPietro Ice Skating Rink.

Down Eastern Avenue, the Patterson Theatre has helped to bring culture and art back to the area. Across the street, Matthew's Pizza is considered by many the best in the city.

All in all if you're looking for some crabs, a cold beer and great company -- this very Baltimore neighborhood is probably the spot for you.
