Player of the Year
Lindsay Katz, Roland Park
Katz won the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference's No. 1 singles championship. It was the third consecutive year the junior advanced to the finals.
In the prior two finals, she was matched up against last year's All-Metro Player of the Year Annie Wu of Bryn Mawr, who finished her career with three consecutive titles.
Katz is expected to be one of the most dominant players in the metro area again next season.
Coach of the Year
Kate Brendler, Bryn Mawr
Bryn Mawr finished 10-2 and won the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference tournament championship. Bryn Mawr was the IAAM's regular season co-champion with Notre Dame Prep.
This was the third straight conference title and the fourth in five years for the Mawrtians.
Sophomore Erica Choo was runner-up in the conference singles to Lindsay Katz of Roland Park. Senior Jenna Feldman and junior Clare Gottsch upset the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds on the way to winning the No. 2 doubles title, and seniors Gussie MacLaughlin and Maggie Li completed their undefeated season by winning the No. 1 doubles championship. It was Bryn Mawr's first doubles championship since 1998.
Brendler also was named All-Metro Coach of the Year last season.
All-Metro Team
Roxann Alban, Annapolis
Alban, a second-year varsity player, finished second in the regionals, losing to Michelle Jordan of Broadneck, to advance to the state tournament. There, the sophomore made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Katelyn Stokes of Eleanor Roosevelt, the eventual state runner-up. "She is definitely a more solid player this year, and her emotional and mental control of her game has improved," coach Joanne Foster said.
Brittany Bolster, Liberty
Bolster finished the regular season 15-0. The senior outscored her opponents 180-16 overall in games. She was 7-1 in tournament play, as she won her fourth straight Carroll County title and second regional title before losing in three sets in the state tournament to Moriah Burke of Magruder. "Being the only senior on the girls team, Brittany showed a tremendous amount of leadership both on and off the court," coach Dave Abarbanel said. Bolster will continue playing next year at Shepherd University.
Caroline Capute, Friends
Capute played No. 1 singles for the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference team and has more than 50 wins without a loss, including several matches against A Conference opponents. The senior has won the Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference title four years in a row. "She practices all year long and has played in numerous tournaments," coach Bob Campbell said. "Her undefeated record is impressive."
Katherine Charchalis, Hereford
Charchalis' record during the regular season was 11-1 at No. 1 singles. She finished fourth in singles at the Baltimore County tournament and first in mixed doubles with her younger brother, Alex, in the regionals. They lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual winners at the state tournament. The senior's four-year career record was 71-11. She will play at Lafayette next year.
Erica Choo, Bryn Mawr
Choo had a stellar season playing No. 1 singles, finishing 10-2 in the regular season. Her only losses were to Lindsay Katz of Roland Park. Choo kept the momentum going into the IAAM A Conference tournament, where she was seeded No. 2 and lost in the final to Katz. "She will be ready to challenge both teammate Laura Simmons and Katz next season," coach Kate Brendler said.
Epiphany English, Wilde Lake
English made an impressive run in the Region V tournament with an upset victory over Marriotts Ridge's Haley Katsman, who won the Howard County championship, before beating Atholton's Julia Southerland in the final. English advanced to the state tournament, where she lost to Middletown's Lindsey Main, who advanced to the semifinals.
Michele Jordan, Broadneck
Jordan had another outstanding season for Broadneck, departing with a 38-8 record in Anne Arundel County league play over four years. The senior won the regional title and advanced to the state tournament, where she beat Maya Davis of Bladensburg, 6-0, 6-1, in the opening round. Jordan, who was Broadneck's captain, lost in the next round to eventual champion Katie Schafer of Linganore. "All players had a great respect for her and her game," coach Mike Hudson said. "She practiced very hard and was a real fighter when match time came. She will surely be missed."
Lolita Kachay, Pikesville
Kachay, a three-year varsity player, had another strong season. She finished third in Baltimore County and second in the regionals. The junior advanced to the state tournament in College Park, where she lost to top-seeded Katelyn Stokes of Eleanor Roosevelt. "She's had another strong season for us and has gotten better each year," Pikesville coach Jerry Dresner said.
Fatima Ouattara, Woodlawn
Ouattara took Baltimore County by storm this season after transferring to Woodlawn from Florida, where she attended several tennis schools. Ouattara, a junior, went unbeaten during the regular season and won the county and regional championships. Ouattara beat Barbara Gore in the state tournament before losing to the third-seed, Liz Kaufman of Churchill, in the quarterfinals.
