Baltimore County expects to get a major economic shot in the arm with a new Wegmans anchoring a new development in the heart of Owings Mills.

Construction has started on the Wegmans supermarket slated to open next September at Foundry Row in Owings Mills.

The grocer will be one of the first stores to open at the $140 million, 50-acre redevelopment of the former Solo Cup factory on Reisterstown Road, developers Greenberg Gibbons and Vanguard said.

The retailer is building a 110,000-square-foot store.

Wegmans' opening will be "followed by a great mix of other top-quality stores, services and restaurants," said Brian Gibbons, chairman and CEO of Greenberg Gibbons.

Those include LA Fitness, Sports Authority, DSW, Ulta Beauty, Panera Bread, Zoe's Kitchen, Smashburger, Nally Fresh, LifeBridge Health and other national stores and eateries.

Baltimore County Councilwoman Vicki Almond said the addition of a Wegmans "sends a strong message that Baltimore County is a great place to do business."

Construction for the overall project, expected to bring almost 3,100 jobs,  started over the summer.
