Wegmans Food Markets shoppers will be able to redeem loyalty club discounts using Apple Pay this fall.
The Rochester-based grocer said this week it will be among the nation's first supermarkets to enable the payment system for such discounts.
"Efficient, accurate, private and secure checkout is important to us because it is important to our customers, and Apple Pay has delivered," Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale said in the announcement.
Wegmans customers will be able to add their Shoppers Club card to the Wallet app in iOS 9 and use it at checkout with Apple Pay. Shoppers will hold their iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus near the terminal at checkout, with their finger on Touch ID, and discounts will be awarded. The feature will work with the Apple Watch too.
Credit or debit card numbers are not stored on Apple devices or servers, for security and privacy purposes.
Wegmans, an 86-store family-owned chain in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts, has four stores in the Baltimore area.
