Pier 1 Imports, one of the anchor stores at Towson Circle in Towson, is closing that location.

The retailer is running a store-closing sale and offering discounts on all merchandise.

"Pier 1 Imports continually reviews new and existing store locations to make sure we're operating as efficiently as possible," Melissa Simon, a Pier 1 spokeswoman, said in an email. "Where necessary, based on that review, we make the strategic business decision to close certain locations on a case-by-case basis."

The owner of Towson Circle, Retail Properties of America Inc. of Illinois, said last year it plans to redevelop the retail project that also includes Trader Joe's and Barnes & Noble, adding apartments and a hotel.

Retail Properties also recently purchased Towson Square, the movie theater and restaurant development next door.

UPDATE: A spokeswoman for the developer said Wednesday that Pier 1's closing is a result of the lease ending and not related to redevelopment plans. The spokeswoman, Kim Freely, said she had no updates on those plans at this point.

Trader Joe's had said last month that it plans to move from Towson Circle to the Shops at Kenilworth in 2017. The Kenilworth mall will be renovated.

Pier 1 has nine stores in the Baltimore area, including locations Hunt Valley, Columbia, Gambrills and Catonsville. The Towson store will close next month.
