Macy's Santa letter campaign will benefit Make-A-Wish

Still need to mail off that letter to Santa? If so, consider stamping it and dropping it in a Santa Mail letterbox at a Baltimore-area Macy's.

The retailer is promising to donate $1 for every letter received -- up to $1 million -- to Make-A-Wish, which  grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.

It's all part of the department store's annual "Believe" campaign, now in its fifth year, through which the company has donated nearly $5 million to the wish granting charity so far.

On Friday, Dec. 14, designated National Believe Day, Macy's will help grant wishes to children across the country during events at its stores. One is planned for 9:30 a.m. at Macy's at Towson Town Center, where a wish will be granted to a Westminster boy and singers from the Teen Angel Project, a non-profit program for middle and high school students, will perform.

Macy's says its campaign was inspired by Virginia O'Hanlon, the 8-year-old whose letter to the New York Sun newspaper in 1897 prompted editor Francis P. Church to respond in a now-famous editorial, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."

Macy's is accepting letters, which must be stamped and addressed to Santa At the North Pole, though Dec. 24.
