All the seafood sold at Giant Food's in-store service counters is now 100 percent sustainably sourced, the grocer announced today.

Seafood sold under Giant's Nature's Promise and Own Brand also is all sustainably sourced, including frozen shrimp and canned tuna, Giant said.

The grocer said it offers more than 200 sustainable seafood items that meet criteria for being farmed or fished in an environmentally  responsible manner.

"Sustainable seafood is the right consumer choice and is also better for the health of the aquatic ecosystems that produce it," Marissa Nelson, senior vice president of responsible retailing and healthy living for Giant parent company Ahold USA, said in the announcement.

"We work with seafood suppliers who share our same values of respect for the environment and responsible product sourcing," including "environmentally responsible" fisheries and fish farms, Nelson said.

Giant said its standards adhere to practices and certifications of the Marine Stewardship Council, Aquaculture Stewardship Council or Best Aquaculture Practices.
