Giant Food introduces prescription savings card

Giant Food has launched a prescription card that's good for discounts on prescriptions and other health-related products.

The grocer's Prescription Savings Card is not an insurance plan. But customers who pay a $10 enrollment fee to sign up can expect savings on both brand name and generic prescriptions, Giant says.

Gayle Shields, director of pharmacy operations for Giant Food of Landover, said in the retailer's announcement that customers can expect to get medications for themselves and their pets "at a fraction of  the price."

The card can be used for any prescription that a customer pays for out-of pocket. Shoppers with health insurance can use the card for prescriptions that are not covered. Select generic medications will cost $3.99 for a 30-day supply and $9.99 for a 90-day supply.

Additional promotions on pharmacy prescriptions or services will be offered to cardholders throughout the year, such as discounts on flu shots and diabetes testing supplies.

Customers who join will get $10 off a future grocery purchase at Giant, a chain of 171 supermarkets in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington.
