Free Shipping Day is today: Top 10 retailers based on delivery times

Today is Free Shipping Day, when hundreds of retailers offer the service for free with guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve -- or sooner.

Now in its seventh year, the specially designated day got its start when the founders of FreeShipping.org signed up merchants hoping to extend the online shopping season.

Most of the big chains and brands are offering free shipping as well as other deals.

Merchants with such offers include The Body Shop, REI, Target, J.Crew, Sports Authority, Neiman Marcus, Under Armour, Nike, Nine West and many others.

Online shopping has been strong so far this season, with Cyber Monday sales reaching $2 billion, according to Kurt Salmon.

The consulting firm today released its top 10 list of retailers with the fastest delivery times. The top retailers, culled from an analysis of 59 retailers across a range of categories, delivered multi-unit Cyber Monday orders in an average of 2.6 days, more than twice as fast as the average delivery time of 5.7 days.

"Retailers who fulfilled Cyber Monday orders in three days or less are clearly firing on all cylinders," said Steve Osburn, retail strategist at Kurt Salmon.

He said retailers have improved their forecasts and better aligned their merchandising, marketing and distribution.

This year, 78 percent of retailers offered free shipping on Cyber Monday, up from 70 percent last year. But just over half offered free shipping on all orders as opposed to requiring a spending threshold to qualify. A few had glitches, with 16 percent of merchants analyzed experiencing website issues such as crashes during check-out.

Here are the top 10 fastest shippers, from Kurt Salmon.

  • Google -- one day.
  • Net-A-Porter -- two days
  • Walgreens -- two days
  • Amazon -- three days
  • Barneys New York -- three days
  • Cabela's -- three days
  • Nike -- three days
  • Staples -- three days
  • TOMS -- three days
  • Under Armour -- three days
