AT&T imagines the "toll free" app: report

A Wall Street Journal report today noted how AT&T is mulling over a new business model in mobile apps: the so-called "toll free" app.

App developers and publishers who want a consumer to download a bandwidth-intensive app will be able to pay AT&T for the cost of letting the consumer download the app. As mobile telecom providers start to charge for data plan usage, there's concern that consumers would be less likely to download and use data-intensive apps, such as video services.

That's where a company can subsidize such a bandwidth intensive app for the user, according to AT&T plans detailed by the WSJ.

Carriers are looking for new ways to make money off their mobile networks, the WSJ notes.
