Their luggage packed with meat and spices, 35 chili competitors are headed to Fells Point for the 31st Maryland State Chili Championship Cookoff. It's the first time the competition has been held in Baltimore.

We had a fine Friday night dinner Birroteca Bel Air, the 7-month-old restaurant located on Baltimore Pike. Really, Birroteca was just what we wanted after at the end of a hot early summer week. It's just fancy enough to make you feel like you're having a night on the town, but it's comfortable and accessible.

Highland Inn has closed after 18 months of operation. Housed in a renovated 1890s farmhouse, the Howard County restaurant was owned by Brian Boston, the executive chef and co-owner of the Milton Inn in Baltimore County.
On July 1, Gertrude's will host DougStrong, a fund-raising evening in support of Doug Wetzel, the restaurant's executive pastry chef, who suffered liver and kidney failure while competing in a May 30 triathlon near Chestertown.
