The Capital Gazette and Baltimore Sun jointly won the Society of Professional Journalists' 2018 Sigma Delta Chi Award for Deadline Reporting among publications with a daily circulation of more than 100,000 for their staffs’ coverage of the June 2018 shooting that killed five Capital Gazette employees. The Capital Gazette also won for Editorial Writing for editorials documenting the psyche of the newsroom after the attack.
In the inaugural News Leaders Association Awards, the staff of the Capital Gazette and The Baltimore Sun jointly won the Al Neuharth Breaking News Reporting Award for their coverage of the attack on the Capital Gazette newsroom that killed Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters.
