Tom Hanks toys with 'Major Matt Mason'

Move over, G.I. Joe: Major Matt Mason may be making a comeback.

Tom Hanks, who went to the moon in 1995's "Apollo 13," is orbiting a live-action movie based on the moon-based major, according to Variety. Created during the lunar excitement of the 1960s, Mason was a Mattel action figure who, along with his Men in Space, protected our planet from alien threats. The line was discontinued in the 1970s, though, as moon madness wore off.

There's no word yet on scheduling, plot or how Mason will be updated for today's moviegoers. A movie based on rival Hasbro toy line "G.I. Joe" will blast into theaters Aug. 7.

Hanks, meanwhile, can be seen this year in the "Da Vinci Code" sequel "Angels & Demons."
