'The Ides of March'

George Clooney is in fine form as star, director, co-screenwriter and a producer of this smart political drama, in which he casts himself as a governor eyeing a presidential nomination. What happens behind the scenes is a wake-up call to many of his staffers, especially one idealist (Ryan Gosling) who starts to debate working for a candidate who may not be living the values he readily espouses.

The first-rate cast also includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei and Jeffrey Wright. DVD extras: two "making-of" documentaries; audio commentary by Clooney and producer and co-screenwriter Grant Heslov. *** (R: P) (Also on Blu-ray and Movies on Demand)
