Roland Emmerich Lays 'Foundation'

Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" has a director.

Roland Emmerich will take a seat behind the camera for a film adaptation of the classic science fiction, according to Variety. Asimov's original stories told of a far-future civilization on the edge of collapse; a group of scientists tries to find a way to preserve as much knowledge as possible for their descendants.

Emmerich, 53, made his name directing sci-fi and action movies, including "Stargate" and "Independence Day." No word on how that experience will help Emmerich helm a more thoughtful storyline for "Foundation."
