NFL Gives NBC a Strong Sunday

A marquee matchup on "Sunday Night Football" propelled NBC to a ratings win Sunday despite a better-than-usual performance by ABC's "Desperate Housewives."

NBC averaged an 11.2 rating/17 share for the night to beat out ABC, 9.7/15, and CBS, 9.4/14, for the top spot (the numbers for NBC and CBS might change some, as both had live sports Sunday). FOX came in fourth with a 4.5/7, and The CW trailed with a 1.6/2.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, NBC led the way with a 6.9 rating. ABC took second with a 5.7, followed by CBS, 4.1, and FOX, 3.5. The CW managed only a 0.9.

Late-ending NFL games and "60 Minutes" put CBS on top at 7 p.m. with an 11.8/19. NBC's "Football Night in America" scored a 7.8/12, helped out some by game coverage on the West Coast. ABC took third with "America's Funniest Home Videos," 6.5/10. A pair of "Simpsons" reruns put FOX in fourth, ahead of The CW's "Supernatural" repeat.

NBC took the lead at 8 p.m. with the game between Indianapolis and New England, which earned an 11.8/17. ABC moved up to second with "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," 8.8/13. CBS came in third with the end of "60 Minutes" and "The Amazing Race." The annual "Treehouse of Horror" episode of "The Simpsons," 6.0/9, and "American Dad," 4.6/7, kept FOX in fourth. The CW went with "7th Heaven," 2.6/4.

At 9 p.m., "Desperate Housewives" scored a 14.2/20 for ABC, the night's best rating. "Sunday Night Football" improved to 12.9/19 on NBC. "The Amazing Race" and "Cold Case" averaged 8.3/12 for CBS, while FOX went with "Family Guy," 5.0/7, and "The War at Home," 3.9/6. The CW aired an "America's Next Top Model" repeat.

"Sunday Night Football" reclaimed first place for NBC at 10 p.m. with a 12.5/20. ABC's "Brothers & Sisters," 9.2/15, edged CBS' "Without a Trace," 9.0/15, for second.

On Saturday, CBS won the night rather easily as its drama repeats and "48 Hours" averaged 5.9/11. FOX took second at 4.0/7, followed by NBC, 3.8/7, and ABC, 3.2/6.
