We're totally on board with MTV's new push for original scripted programming. In fact, "Awkward" was one of our favorite new shows of 2011. But the problem facing the network right now is trying to balance its "voice of a generation" reputation with its proclivity to push boundaries in all the wrong ways. "Skins" turned out to be all controversy and very little heart, designed first and foremost to attract the Parents Television Council's wrath (and publicity). But when you make storytelling and developing relatable characters your priority (with those drugs-'n-drinking story lines secondary) instead of focusing solely on the shock value, you can turn out with a darn good product that appeals to kids and parents alike. The network should keep that in mind as it goes forward.
