In one fell swoop, the cast of Werner Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant" has grown around star Nicolas Cage, with the addition of 10 actors.
The update of Abel Ferrara's 1992 cult drama will begin shooting later this summer from a script by William Finkelstein.
Once again the plot revolves around a morally conflicted and fairly corrupt cop (Cage, stepping in for original star Harvey Keitel). Eva Mendes was previously cast in the female lead.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, joining Cage and Mendes are Val Kilmer ("Top Gun"), Xzibit ("The X-Files: I Want to Believe"), Fairuza Balk ("American History X"), Jennifer Coolidge ("Best in Show"), Shawn Hatosy ("Outside Providence"), Vondie Curtis Hall ("Chicago Hope"), Denzel Whitaker ("The Great Debaters"), Shea Wigham ("All the Real Girls"), Katie Chonacas and Herzog favorite Brad Dourif ("The Wide Blue Yonder").
Details are scarce on the roles being played by the individual actors, but Kilmer will play Cage's crooked partner, while Xzibit will play one of the piece's main villains, a thug named Big Fade.
