June 18: The USA's phantom foul

Maurice Edu scored just before the 86th minute in the US's group match against Slovenia, letting the players and millions of cheering Americans think that the US had taken a 3-2 lead. Then a whistle blew. And referee Koman Coulibaly of Mali had the goal called off because of a foul in the box. Except the replay showed that no foul ever occurred. If anything, it looked as if a foul should've been called against Slovenia for mobbing the American players. The US moved out of the group round after a last-minute win over Algeria and subsequently lost to Ghana in the round of 16, but it sure looked as though there were some referee shenanigans happening in the Slovenia game. It had more than the ref crying foul. -- Andrea Reiher, Zap2it Related: World Cup coverage at Zap2itGetty
