After a spike last year in LGBT series regulars on mainstream cable, the number of out characters has fallen back to a figure similar to 2009's count. Only 28 regular characters were counted this year, whereas last year, 35 of the regular characters on cable were lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
HBO currently holds the highest number of LGBT representations on mainstream cable with 11 regular or recurring characters. Not far behind is Showtime with 10 regular or recurring characters.
Other LGBT-inclusive networks include ABC Family, FX and TeenNick, as well as TNT and BBC America.
