'E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial'

Universal's 100th-anniversary celebration means the Blu-ray debuts of some of the studio's titles most-awaited for that format, and here's another, Steven Spielberg's legendary tale of a far-from-home alien and the boy (Henry Thomas) who befriends him.

The film's astronomical success also gave big boosts to phone calls home and a certain brand of candy - it's hard to believe now that the first candy company Spielberg approached turned him down - and also to the then-young screen career of Drew Barrymore. DVD extras: three "making-of" documentaries; deleted scenes. **** (PG: AS, P)
