'Where the Wild Things Are'

Director and co-screenwriter Spike Jonze brings the classic Maurice Sendak story to life in a very engaging way, as a youngster (Max Records) escapes from household punishment as king of a fantasy land he creates in his own mind. It's largely inhabited by Wild Things, monsters who obey his rule. Catherine Keener and Mark Ruffalo also are in the human cast. Characters' voices are supplied by (among others) James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O'Hara and Chris Cooper. DVD extras: "Webisodes." *** (PG: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray)
