Of all the movies Robert Redford has directed, this one got the least theatrical distribution, but it still reflects the Oscar-winning filmmaker's knack for interesting stories and smart casting. It's the tale of Mary Surratt (played by Robin Wright), charged with involvement in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln largely because John Wilkes Booth (Toby Kebbell) was a frequent visitor to her boardinghouse.
The novice attorney (James McAvoy) representing her realizes she may be targeted to draw out another alleged conspirator ... her son (Johnny Simmons). Kevin Kline, Tom Wilkinson, Danny Huston, Evan Rachel Wood, Justin Long and Alexis Bledel ("Gilmore Girls") also star. DVD extras: 12 "making-of" documentaries; audio commentary by Redford. *** (PG-13: V)Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
