Ludwig Bemelmans' first book about the wee Parisian schoolgirl was published in 1939, and the series became popular worldwide. The series continues to this day, written by Bemelmans' grandson John Bemelmans-Marciano. Although the "Madeline" stories have been retold on the silver and small screen, the 1998 film was a live-action adaptation starring Hatty Jones. In the film, Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne) decides to sell Madeline's school and it's her job to save it. How can you go wrong with Frances McDormand as headmistress Miss Clavel? The movie was nominated for four Young Artist Awards and grossed almost $30 million worldwide. -- Andrea Reiher, Zap2it
