Algerian runner Taoufik Makhloufi has been thrown out of the Summer Olympics for not trying hard enough. He's a medal contender for the 1500m who was forced to run in the 800m after his team failed to withdraw him from the event by the deadline. So when the race started, he stopped running a couple hundred meters in and wandered into the infield.

International Association of Athletics Federations says in a statement, "The Referee considered that he had not provided a bona fide effort and decided to exclude him from participation in all further events in the competition."

Makhloufi is just the latest in a string of athletes not trying their best at the 2012 Summer Games, the worst of which were eight female badminton players expelled for throwing matches so as to face easier opponents moving forward.

Update: The Algerian federation insists Makhloufi has a knee problem and organizers knew about it, so he was reinstated for the 1500m finals after a medical officer for the games assessed his condition.
