It all started from a dream. Well, and the fact that when he was playing seventh grade basketball, Ken Sothman sensed that he would never grow to be 6"10 like Kevin Love. Instead Ken was a 5"11 poor-man's Chris Mullin on the court, and since a future in basketball was out, he wanted to stick with sports through broadcast media.
Ken, or as his friends call him “Bud”, is from Hobart, Indiana. A city that was once a former powerhouse in high school football, along with one of the handful of cross country programs in the state that has won multiple state titles, Ken is very resourced in the idea of crazed high school sports fans. As they say in the Region, once a Brickie, always a Brickie.
Ken graduated from Ball State University in spring of 2009, where he was the Executive Producer of the Emmy-nominated Cardinal Sports Live, Sports Director of the Emmy-winning NewsWatch, and an original member of the immersive learning program known as "Sports Link". So four years, three internships, a telecommunications degree with a production option, and bunch of student awards here and there, and he eventually found himself with the hardest working sports staff in Indianapolis at Fox 59.
As a former runner (finished a marathon and 24 hour relay) and diver (nobody mastered the aching belly flop as good as Sothman) he’s a fan of the major sports, but the overlooked ones too. And that's the beauty of his job as your high school sports reporter: no IHSAA state championship, of any sort, will go uncovered. You'll also see Ken dibble-dabble in the college/pro sports from time to time, but his primary focus is the future stars of tomorrow, along with helping maintain IndySportsNation.com.
In his free time Ken is often studying his craft, watching old Lakers games, and spending time with his friends that are spread all over the state.
So make sure to look for Ken and the Indy Sports Nation-wagon at your local high school events, make sure to say hi (he often carries t-shirts!), and feel free to shoot him an e-mail at KSothman@Fox59.com with any story ideas.
p.s.
