An Indianapolis Firefighter was injured this morning battling a house fire. Transported to Wishard Hospital the firefighter suffered injuries after entering the house with the attack line and encountered heavy fire. The injuries included small areas of 2nd degree burns to his hands, face, knee and shoulders with one hand sustaining a more serious burn than the other and an ankle injury. Typical of situations involving high heat, large amounts of fire and the possibility of a forceful blast of flame, firefighters can sustain injuries similar to this from compression of the gear against the skin or when wet gear mixes with heat and flame. The firefighter was using an 1 ¾ hand line to extinguish the flame at the time. Indianapolis Firefighters are fortunate to have the most current, state of the art fire gear along with a safety program in place that allows for the utmost care in firefighter protection. However, firefighting gear is simply a measure of safety¿not an absolute.

According to firefighters, this is the second house fire in this residence within the month. The first occurred on October 9 and was a room and contents fire that was ruled electrical. The fire came in at 8:16 am and the dollar loss was $6500.
