Pike, Zionsville hope to makes regular season results stick

If your hear a knock on the Class 5A state championship door, it might be Pike and Zionsville.

Together they have been near the top of the class in play during the regular season and appeared to be threats to make a run at a championship.

But as the 2011 season approaches, neither the Red Devils or the Eagles have brought home a state championship, suffering disappointment in the sectional after near runs for the title the last few years.

The teams together had one last tune up before the beginning of the 2011 season, as the teams scrimmaged at Pike High School Friday night. It was a controlled session, with each offense running a set number of plays in segments across two hours.

After appearing in the 2007 Class 5A state championship game, Derrick Moyers has seen his team's seasons end in the sectional round. Last year was their most promising shot to get back to playing deep into November, as the Red Devils made the Sectional final before falling to Avon by three.

Since popping up to Class 5A, Larry McWhorter's team has fallen early in the playoffs-with a second round sectional exit in 2009 and a first round last year.

The Eagles' hopes for a Hoosier Crossroads Conference title begin next Friday when they host Lafayette Jefferson. Pike also opens at home on August 19th, when they host North Central.
