A 32-year old Cleveland woman was pulled over after driving on the sidewalk. The woman was attempting to get around a slow school bus. In addition to a fine and a 30-day loss of license, the woman also received a strange penalty from the judge.
A judge has ordered that Hardin wear a sign that says “Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid the school bus.” Hardin must wear the sign “near the location of the crime for an hour per day, next Tuesday and Wednesday morning,” according to Fox 8.
I would be on board with this penalty if it were a regular bad driver. But the fact that this woman was trying to avoid a school bus changes my mind completely. Granted, I wouldn’t drive over a sidewalk myself, but I understand the frustration of someone stuck behind a bus. Those things are the worst. I’m a pretty laid-back driver, but if I see a school bus about to cut out in front of me, I will immediately turn into Mario Andretti in order to remain ahead of that bus. You ever notice how school buses don’t have seat belts? It’s because they make 100 stops a minute and never actually get above 7MPH. You could walk off a school bus at full speed and not miss a stride. They also stop every fourth house. No wonder our kids are so obese, little Timmy can’t even walk around the corner to catch the bus. If I were a judge, I’d make this woman wear a sign that said “Hero.”
