There are starting to be a ton of Spotify playlists out there (I’m sure some of you have started your own). But sifting through all of them is a pain in the ass, so here you go.
(If you have an interesting playlist, share it with me.)Postminimalism: John Adams, Paul Lansky, Ingram Marshall and dozens of other composers who showed up in the wake of Reich and Glass (or even before). Try the Volans (it’s fresh today).College 101: Created by Sony Music: “Giving you a music education one fly jam at a time! Your assignment: Check out our playlist and add your favorite tracks to lists of your own. Click on ‘Subscribe’ so that you don’t miss additions to the syllabus.” (Er, okay.) Highlights: Das Racist, Foster the People, The Strokes, Raphael Saadiq.Sasha Frere-Jones’ Mixtape: Picks from The New Yorker pop critic’s list, which he updates frequently (wouldn’t every hipster musician want to be included here?). Right now: Battles, Gil-Scott Heron, Peter Bjorn and John, and others.Music from and inspired by the film “Drive”: Lately everyone seems to be talking about music from this one, so it’s no surprise someone created a primer. Kavinsky, College, I Break Horses, Destroyer, and tons of other great music.End credits from every season of “Entourage”: This one’s interesting because it mashes together all kinds of genres, depending how the HBO show ended that week/year. Leave it to HBO to have the cash to put up for some of these: The Allman Brothers Band (“Southbound”), The Rolling Stones (“Gimme Shelter”), Radiohead (“Fake Plastic Trees”), Elvis Costello (“(I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea”).Radio Anders 25: Wonderfully semi-obscure stuff from Scott Walker, Roxy Music, Propaganda and Midlake.Lady Gaga: A playlist for completists, or anyone too lazy to turn on the radio.“Dagens” Soundtrack: Anna Järvinen, Owl City, The Kinks, MGMT, Richard Ashcroft, João Gilberto, MUCH more. Really good, long playlist, even though I have no idea what “Dagens” means.Kinky Reggae: Because it’s Monday and it’s important to acknowledge that. The Ever-Changing Moods of Anders Fajersson: I don’t know this guy, but I like his taste in music. Starts with Sleigh Bells, The War on Drugs and Ronnie Spector, and it gets better from there.Follow me on Twitter at @MikeHamad.
