June 19, 2009 Spotted Jellyfish Invade Indian River Lagoon Palm Bay, Fl - Officials are asking for the public's help in tracking an invasive jellyfish species that has been spotted in the Indian River Lagoon. The Australian spotted jellyfish -- Phyllorhiza punctata -- range from the size of a human fist to a basketball, biologists with the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program said. They have white, semi-transparent to opaque bell shapes, with white spots on the bell. Frilly arms extending beneath the bell can release a mildly painful sting to humans.
