It's official. The New York Yankees are headed to the playoffs following a win over the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday. It will be the Bronx Bombers' 16th trip in 17 years to the post-season.
Eduardo Nunez hit a tying home run in the eighth inning, Robinson Cano followed with a two-run double allowing the Yanks to rally past the Rays 4-2.
At the start of the day, Tampa Bay was just two games behind the Boston Red Sox to clinch the AL wild-card spot, but things fell apart after All-Star James Shields delivered a poor start.
Despite using a makeshift lineup, New York clinched no worse than a wild-card berth and lowered the magic number to two for its 12th AL East title in 16 seasons.
No wild celebration here: The Yankees exchanged handshakes as if it were just another win.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
