According to Haiti's former Chamber of Deputies, Pierre Eric Jean-Jacques, singer Wyclef Jean is planning to run for president. A spokesperson for the the Grammy Award winner says Jean will announce his decision Thursday.
Jean-Jacques told The Associated Press that Wyclef would run as part of his coalition in the November election.
Wyclef who was born outside Port-au-Prince, immigrated to New York at age 9. He now lives in Saddle River, N.J.
If Wyclef does run, the Fugees co-founder will compete against his uncle who has resigned as U.S. ambassador to prepare a presidential run.
Whomever is the next president of Haiti will have a lot of work to do. The country is still struggling to recover from a devastating earthquake, in January. Jean has been helping his homeland recover and raise funds through his very popular Yele Haiti foundation.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
