Thanks in part to good news from Washington, Wall Street opened significantly higher today, following its worse close in nearly three years yesterday.
U.S. stocks rose more than 1 percent at the open on Friday after the July payrolls report showed that the U.S. economy added some 117,000 jobs. That figure was well higher than most economists expected, and was high enough to shave the unemployment rate slightly, from 9.2 percent to 9.1 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 160.26 points, or 1.41 percent, at 11,543.94 at Friday's open. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 18.04 points, or 1.50 percent, at 1,218.11. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 35.25 points, or 1.38 percent, at 2,591.64.
