Second Person Dies After Being Pulled From SI Pool

The second of two young men who were found floating in a shallow pool after attempting a military-style breath-holding technique, died Sunday, according to authorities.

Jonathan Proce, a 21-year-old lifeguard from Staten Island who wanted to join the Air Force, died while surrounded by friends and family at the NY Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, according to reports.

At the time of the accident, Proce was training with a friend, 21-year-old Bohdan Vitenko, at around 8:25 a.m. July 13, when the men were discovered floating at the bottom of the 3 1/2 foot end of the Lyons Park pool in Tompkinsville.

Both men were pulled from the water and transported to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, in cardiac arrest, officials said.

Vitenko was pronounced dead at the hospital, while Proce clung to life in critical condition until he was pronounced dead Sunday, according to authorities.
