A proposed plan to turn a former Staten Island convent into a mosque has been rejected by a board of trustees for St. Margaret Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
After nearly a two-month battle between members of the Muslim community and Midland Beach residents, the board has ultimately decided to side with the church's pastor, Rev. Keith Fennessy, who reportedly withdrew his support for the sale last month.
Residents have been outraged since May, when they learned Fennessey had been mulling over an idea to sell the parish's empty convent to the Muslim American Society.
Fennessey apparently entered quietly into a contract with MAS without telling any area residents.
However, according to the contract, the convent could not be transformed into a mosque without approval from the church's board of trustees.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
