An off-duty NYPD detective fatally shot a would-be mugger Sunday night, after officials say the cop was ambushed in an attempted robbery on a Brooklyn street.
According to authorities, the officer was on his way to work when he was attacked by two suspects at the intersection of Brooklyn and Grove Street at about 11:50 p.m. in the Bushwick section.
The cop, who was not immediately identified, was struck with a cane that knocked him to the ground. The officer then opened fire, wounding one of the suspects in the chest.
The gunfire apparently sent the other suspect fleeing on foot from the scene. The wounded suspect was transported to Woodhull Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The officer was not injured, but he was treated for trauma, officials said.
Cops are still searching for the second suspect.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
