Coney Island will forever be known for its boardwalk, the Cyclone, and Nathan’s Famous hot dogs. And fans of the franks say nothing goes better with them than Nathan’s crunchy crinkle cut French fries.
But recently customers are complaining their beloved fries are just not cutting it.
“Right now they just seem a little dried out, not so fresh,” said customer Janae Walton.
MTA worker Jimmy Hoffman stops by the hot dog stand on Surf Avenue almost every day. Instead of ordering plain fries like he used to, he’s getting them smothered with cheddar cheese and bacon to give them a better taste.
“About a year ago they were crisp on the outside, the inside was moist. But right now they taste like cardboard,” Hoffman said.
“They don’t taste the same,” noted Bernice Rizzo of Bensonhurst. “I don’t know exactly what it is.”
It turns out the new wrinkle in the crinkle is the type of potato. The company is blaming a poor potato harvest this spring for having to switch from its regular supply of low starch Katahdins to the starchier Russet Burbanks.
Nathan’s says its tried and true trademark fries will be back before the end of the summer.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
