JERSEY CITY, NJ (PIX11) -- A family so happy to have Corporal Anthony Adams home from Iraq, is now grieving after the 23-year-old was gunned down in an attempted carjacking in Jersey City.

Police are now hunting for Earl Austin, 20, the man they say shot and killed Adams Thursday morning near Martin Luther King Drive and Bidwell Ave.   According to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio, Adams was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. at Jersey City Medical Center.

According to reports, numerous people witnessed Austin approaching Adams as he sat in his 2002 Ford Explorer.  Austin then allegedly fired a fatal shot that passed through the left side of Adams’ torso, leaving his body through the upper right arm.

Police consider Austin armed and dangerous and are asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Offices Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345 or the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.
