An ex-police officer was charged in the murder of a Wood-Ridge man found stabbed to death in his home.
According to authorities, 33-year-old Scott J. Smith was arrested Monday and charged with murdering his friend, 39-year-old John Amendola.
Investigators say the two were at Amendola's home Sunday morning when a verbal dispute escalated to a violent altercation where Smith repeatedly stabbed his friend of 20 years to death.
Smith fled the scene with the weapon, police said.
An investigation led detectives to Amendola's home where the weapon was recovered.
Smith, a former police officer with the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department, was charged with first degree murder. He is being held on $2 million bail.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
