Suffolk County Police arrested a Sound Beach man Tuesday on multiple counts of grand larceny stemming from diamond ring thefts that occurred throughout Suffolk County in January and February of this year.
In three instances, police say John D. Cumbow contacted sellers of diamond rings on Craigslist.com, and would set up meetings at jewelry stores to get appraisals and discuss a potential sale. On two occasions police say the 29-year-old was able to swap the real ring with a replica during the meeting and leave the scene before the owner noticed. In the third case cops say, he simply fled the scene with the ring and say Cumbow would sometimes use a stolen pickup truck as the getaway vehicle.
In addition, police say Cumbow, of Sound Beach, also stole diamond rings from a jewelry stores in Dix Hills and Sayville. In both cases, Cumbow was able to get possession of the rings while discussing a possible purchase with the store's staff, before flee.
Cumbow's girlfriend, 21-year-old Amanda Carullo, 21, Holtsville, was also arrested Wednesday in connection with two of the diamond ring thefts.
Police are asking anyone who believes they may also have been victimized by Cumbow to contact Suffolk County police.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
