Controversial 'Hooker' Billboard Taken Down

A billboard for a low-budget vodka company is grabbing attention in the South Bronx.

The four-word slogan, "escort quality, hooker pricing" that sits high above the Bruckner Expressway is not a welcome addition to Hunts Point, a neighborhood that has worked hard over the years to battle a prostitution problem.

"For years our community board has been working with the police to combat prostitution," said Community Board Two District Manager, Rafael Salamanca.

Hunts Point is an industrial area that was randomly selected to host the sign, according to the marketing company. In 2002, HBO aired a documentary called 'Hooker in the Point', that profiled the lives of prostitutes working the South Bronx streets. Local leaders called on the marketing company, MMG, to take ad down. Today, it was removed.

This is nothing new for the company that got criticism last November for a billboard above the Henry Hudson Parkway. After the Anti-Defamation League got involved, the ad that said "Christmas Quality, Hannukah Pricing" was taken down.
