Freshman College Student Dies During A Basketball Game

Authorities in Farmingdale are investigating what caused a 17-year-old freshman college student to suddenly collapse and die while playing a school basketball game.

A Farmingdale State College spokesperson says Dominic Murray died during an informal game Monday night. Firefighters and police attempted to resuscitate Murray, who was in cardiac arrest, but they were not able to revive him.

Murray was taken to New Island Hospital in Bethpage, where he was pronounced dead.

Friends described the 6' 2" Murray as healthy and athletic, making his sudden death even more shocking. The Nassau County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the official cause of death.

Murray, who did not have a chance to declare a major, was an only child whose father died while Murray was in high school. Melinda Murray, his mother, released a statement saying he loved basketball and she was very proud of him.

Murray lived in East Elmhurst, Queens before moving into campus housing in Long Island. He was recruited from Monsignor McClancy High School.

The college is providing grief counselors for students.

Funeral services have not been announced.
