Pregnant Mother Killed By Stray Bullet While Sheltering Children

One woman is dead and three others are injured after a shooting in the East New York section of Brooklyn Friday afternoon, officials confirmed.

Two women had just picked up their children from nearby P.S. 298 at 2:30 p.m., when multiple shots were fired near the intersection of Watkins and Pitkin Ave., police said.

Caught in the gunfire, one woman, 34-year-old Zurana Horton, tried to shelter the children as the bullets flew. A bullet struck Horton -- who was pregnant, according to a source -- killing her at the scene.

The other mother, 31, was shot in the arm and chest. EMS took her to Brookdale Hospital where she is in stable condition, according to officials.

An 11-year-old girl was also grazed in the cheek by a bullet and was treated at Brookdale Hospital.

Police believe the gunman may have been shooting from the rooftop of 1800 Pitkin Ave., about a block away, where police found several shell casings. Officers also found five other shell casings on the sidewalk in front of the building.

Police are investigating the possibility that the gunman was shooting at a group of teenage males below.

Three Hispanic males fled the scene after the shooting, according to police, who have already questioned one. According to the NYPD he has not been identified as a suspect and police are now searching for two suspects and the gunman.

A $12,000 reward is being offered for information in the case.
