Easily accessible by the 4, 5, and 6 trains, Strip Ministry of Waxing is a full service hair removal salon where you can get a tidying up wax or you can dare to go completely bare.
We booked the session only a few days in advance and they were able to accommodate us early on a Saturday afternoon. The salon opens ever day at 11am, closing at 9pm on week nights and 7pm on Saturdays and Sundays. We booked a full Brazilian bikini wax as well as an IPL (intense Pulsed-Light) under arm session.
Our biggest fear heading into the appointment was the fear of pain. Let's face it; hair removal 'down there' can be pretty uncomfortable. We got a bit turned around due to our poor sense of direction, but the folks at Strip didn't chastise us at all.
We were greeted upon entry by Ramon who was courteous and professional and asked us to fill out several forms. He then introduced us to our esthetician Katie. Katie was a hip, outgoing person and straight away she asked us if we'd like to use the ladies room before beginning (which was nice because of course, we needed to go).
Katie escorted us to a room for the first procedure - the IPL session. She instructed us to take our top off and relax and cover ourselves with a towel and don some cheesy looking sunglasses.
Katie informed us that the glasses would protect our eyes form the light used (she sported a pair as well) and she applied a cool gel to our left underarm. She told us it was a good thing we shaved beforehand, but if we hadn't, she'd shave the treatment area for us.
The IPL felt like a sonogram and Katie warned us we might feel some heat and to let her know if we were uncomfortable but we were fine. Each underarm roughly underwent two 30 second treatments. We felt oddly relaxed. Katie let us know that IPL treatment is available for all body hair and usually requires several sessions. She said we weren't an ideal candidate due to our light hair but we should see a definite reduction in regrowth. We only had one session but usually about six are required (for more info, click HERE).
After our IPL treatment, we journeyed downstairs to a different treatment room. The treatment rooms all have edgy artwork and appeared to be quite clean and sanitary. A combination of Harry Potter and the Bible, the ceilings had cool quotations painted for clients to check out whilst being groomed.
Katie had un undress from the waist down and cover ourselves with a towel. She used a hard wax (no cloth or paper strip needed) that had a distinctly (and pleasant) chocolate aroma. In six to eight quite painful (but blessedly fast) rips, Katie had us completely bare. She then had us flip over where she tidied up the rear.
Katie let us know that everyone is different but regular growth is 4 to 6 weeks and it is best not to trim. She told us she can get all the hair no matter what, but it will just hurt more so we made a mental note not to trim next time.
Grooming one's nether region is never a pleasant task, but Katie was a professional and she got it all - including the few random strays that missed the wax. Katie gave us verbal instruction for care as well as paper handouts reiterating when to exfoliate as well as what to do if any ingrown hairs should surface.
The verdict is still out for us on the IPL (have to wait and see what happens) but as far as the Brazilian goes, we are pleased as punch with the salon and the service. We give the Strip Ministry of Waxing two thumbs up and will definitely be making a return visit.
