Man dies after swan attack

A Villa Park man drowned in a bizarre workplace accident. Police say Anthony Hensley, 37, may have gotten too close to a nesting swan.

It happened Saturday morning in a pond at the Bay Colony DrIve Condominiums near Des Plaines.

Hensley was in a kayak, working for Knox Swan and Dog. The North Barrington company was hired to bring in swans to get rid of geese in the pond at the center of the property.

Witnesses reported seeing a swan circling the kayak, but they didn't see the bird physically attacking Hensley. The kayak tipped over, and he fell into the pond. He resurfaced a few times while trying to swim to shore, but police say he was not wearing a life vest.

His employer did not respond to WGNTV messages seeking comment.

Crews searched for 45 minutes before they pulled him from the water. He died at a hospital. The official cause of death was drowning, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Hensley leaves behind a wife and two small children. Donations for a memorial fund for the family are being accepted at Steuerle Funeral Home in Villa Park.
