Child Porn Gets Former Green Oaks Mayor Jail Time

(WGN-AM)- Former Lake County GOP chairman and Green Oaks mayor Tom Adams was sentenced Monday in Lake County Circuit Court to 30 days in jail and 30 months' probation for possession of child pornography, Adams' attorney said.

Adams, 71, was sentenced to spend 30 intermittent days in the county work release program, pay a $10,000 fine, undergo psychological treatment and complete 200 hours of community service, attorney Tom Briscoe said. In addition, Adams must register as a sex offender, and he is prohibited from having unsupervised contact with children younger than 17, Briscoe said.

Adams, who pleaded guilty to 16 counts of child pornography possession in February, could have received up to 14 years in prison. If he had gone to trial on the original charges and had been convicted, he could have been sentenced to 44 years, Briscoe said.

Adams was arrested at his home three years ago. Lake County state's attorney's investigators said they found child pornography on his computer.

In the plea agreement, charges of dissemination of child pornography were dropped, Briscoe said. Adams did not produce child pornography, and he did not attempt to contact any children, Briscoe said. "He is a good man who had a brief lapse of judgment," Briscoe said.

"In my 31 years (as a trial lawyer) I've found when people of prominence get in trouble, most of their friends run for the hills," Briscoe said.

Adams' wife and family and many of his friends and associates stood by him, and about 30 people submitted letters of support to the court, including several elected officials, Briscoe said.
