(WGN-AM)- A recent high school graduate was charged with 16 felony counts today as a result of an auto crash in St. Charles last weekend that left an 18-year-old passenger in his sport-utility vehicle dead.
Kane County Judge James Hallock set bail at $500,000 for Onofrio Lorusso, 18, of Wayne after he was charged with four counts of reckless homicide and 12 counts of aggravated driving under the influence.
Lorusso reportedly was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer that slammed into two trees about 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3100 block of Royal Fox Drive in St. Charles. Cameron Godee, 18, of West Chicago was killed in the crash, and two other passengers were injured.
A hospital blood test showed Lorusso's blood-alcohol level at 0.227, the judge said at a bond hearing where Lorusso appeared, accompanied by his parents. The adult legal limit in Illinois is 0.08. Lorusso also had marijuana in his system, the judge noted.
Hallock ordered Lorusso to surrender his passport and to be outfitted with an alcohol-monitoring anklet should he post bail. His attorney, Vincent Solano, said Lorusso recently graduated form St. Charles East High School, where he played hockey and was planning on attending college this fall.
"Everybody's devastated. I don't know what else you can say," Solano said.
Lorusso's next court appearance is July 1.
